The Two Ronnies was a highly popular BBC TV comedy that aired in the UK in the 1970’s and 80’s. The title was taken from the first names of the two stars, Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker. During the 1970s and 1980s they produced a series of classic TV comedy programs that consistently topped the ratings.

Often involving visual gags, their real comic power came from well-crafted scripts that revolved around word play, parody and mild sexual innuendo. The English language has a vast range of paired words that sound the same as their partner. The success of the "Four Candles" sketch revolves around the miss-understanding that results from miss-hearing what the customer wants.
